Service Learning
Service-Learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates community services with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service-learning aims to develop in students a lifelong commitment to service and leadership. It promotes understanding of local issues as well as recognition of the interrelatedness of communities and societies across the world.
"Experience enhances understanding; understanding leads to more effective action" - Eyler and Giles
The Service-learning Program at College Nine has three components:
Esprit de Corps
A seminar style course designed for College Nine and College Ten students. Participating students volunteer in the community at local schools and non-profits, attend weekly class meetings, and keep a reflection journal. To culminate the service-experience, Esprit students develop a final project related to civic engagement. Read more.
Praxis
A community service organization for students from College Nine and College Ten. Each month Praxis students engage in a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout Santa Cruz County. Read more.
