Welcome Week at College Nine!

Welcome Week begins on Friday, September 25th. There are a number of interesting, fun, and required events, videos and presentations starting that afternoon through the First Day of Classes on Thursday, October 1st.

New students will also have a customized set of Welcome Week programs shared to their UCSC email's Google Calendar, so keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks!

In this video our Provost, Mayanthi Fernando, and our Senior Director of College Student Life, Sarah Woodside Bury, will introduce folks to College Nine and what it means for their student to be joining our community. Slugs CARE and Title IX Presentation (mandatory for new students)
1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
This interactive, two-part presentation promotes community standards and highlights resources available to support students’ well being and success.

Slugs CARE is designed to empower incoming UCSC students to be active in preventing sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking in their communities. Students will learn about affirmative consent, bystander intervention, dynamics of sexual and relationship violence, and how to support survivors. Slugs CARE is hosted by CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education), which provides confidential advocacy and support to individuals impacted by these issues. The Title IX Office will highlight their role in preventing and responding to gender and sex-based discrimination. This session will provide campus specific information supplementing the Sexual Assault Prevention online program all of you must complete. It will emphasize your Title IX rights and the expectations the University has for all of its members. For more information about the Title IX Office, visit titleix.ucsc.edu.

SHOP (Sexual Health Outreach and Promotion) will also give a brief introduction to their services and peer outreach programs. Visit shop.ucsc.edu to learn more.

Webinar Information

College Nine is scheduled to attend the mandatory Slugs CARE and Title IX Presentation on Friday, September 25th from 1:00 - 2:30pm. The presentation will begin promptly at 1:00 pm. Please plan to log on 15 minutes in advance of the scheduled start time.

The presentation will be hosted via Zoom Webinars. There will be opportunities for you to engage by answering polls and submitting questions for the panelists. Your video will be turned off and your microphone will be muted. 

Note that you must register using your UCSC email address as this is how attendance is recorded. Please register when you receive the link so that signing on will be easier on the day of the training.

If you anticipate having difficulty with the presentation content due to a previous experience of sexual or relationship violence, you can reach out to care@ucsc.edu to request an alternate training assignment.

Many of the important connections you will make and skills you’ll learn while you’re at college will happen outside of the classroom. These videos (2) and presentations (2) will explore some avenues for finding community in student leadership at Colleges Nine and Ten. You’ll hear from current student leaders and learn more about what useful skills can be learned outside of the classroom. You’ll also explore some of the clubs and groups we have here at Colleges Nine and Ten. You’ll hear directly from several groups you can join this fall, as well as find out about some opportunities that will become available later in your college career.
