College Nine and College Ten are hiring 37 Resident Assistants, or RAs. Thirteen will work in the College Nine Res Halls, fourteen in the College Ten Res Halls, six in the College Nine and College Ten Apartments, and four in the International Living Center (ILC).
RAs are an important part of the Residential Life Team at College Nine and College Ten. This team works to create and maintain a supportive system, which facilitates the individual’s efforts to fulfill academic goals, establish self-identity and values, and learn to respect the right of neighbors to do the same. They utilize skills in leadership, cross-cultural communication, student referral, emergency response training, as well as training in other areas; with the goal of creating an environment in which the community’s and the individual’s goals can be realized. There are opportunities for students to develop skills in leadership, intercultural inclusion, organizational and management skills, confidence, integrity, emotional maturity, and sense of self and values.
In order to be eligible for this position, Candidates must have the following:
- Have completed one year of university prior to starting in the position.
- Experience living in a group setting.
- Be a full-time UCSC student while in the position.
- Be in good academic standing, maintaining a 2.5 cumulative GPA from the time of application throughout employment.
- Be in good judicial standing, which is defined as being below the probationary level, from the time of application throughout employment.
- Pass a fingerprinting/background check.
- Ability to work well in a team
- Comfortable being a leader in group settings
- Ability to use authority with good judgment
- Possess administrative skills
- Possess effective communication skills in order to successfully approach people, mediate conflict situations, and enforce university and housing policies

The term "Returning Candidates" refers to students who have previously worked as an RA at College Nine and College Ten. And the term "All Candidates" refers to both new and returning candidates.
• January 17th, 18st, and 26th - RA Info Sessions for New Candidates, 7:30-8:30 in the Rec Lounge at College Nine and College Ten
New candidates are required to attend an RA Info Session prior to applying for the RA position. This includes those who are currently an RA/NA/CA at another college. (If you are studying abroad or otherwise unable to attend a Student Leader Info Session, then please contact CRE Mirabai Hutton before January 28th to ask for an exception.)
• February 6th - RA Applications Due by 8am
All candidates must turn in their RA applications by 8am on Monday, February 6th. This includes both the online application as well as supplemental documents or references.
• February 9th - Interview Invitations Sent by Email
All candidates will receive an email after we review your application to let you know if you are being invited to an interview. In reviewing our application we are looking to ensure that your application is complete and that you meet our requirements.
• February 11th - Group Interviews for New Candidates, (Time and Location will be announced later)
New candidates are participate in a group interview on Saturday, February 11th. Exact interview time may vary, but will occur between 8am and 5pm. Group Interview is mandatory for all new candidates, so mark this date in your calender now and make any arrangements you need to make to be available. (If you are studying abroad, or likewise unable to attend the group interview process, you will be able to request an exception in your application.)
At the group interview, candidates will work together to complete a task relevant to the RA position. Members of the Selection Committee will be there to observe how individuals work as a team as well as how they approach the assigned task. Please remember that the Group Interview is not a competition, but rather a chance for to begin working with potential co-workers.
• February 16th - Interview Invitations Sent by Email
New Candidates will receive an email after your group interview to let you know if you are being invited to an individual interview.
• week of February 21th - Individual Interviews for Returning Candidates
Returning candidates will be asked to attend a individual interview. All interviews will be held between 8am and 5pm and will take place at the College Nine and College Ten Residential Life and Housing Office. Candidates will be given instructions in signing up in the February 17th email.
• week of February 27th - Individual Interviews for New Candidates (Time and Location will be announced later)
New candidates will be asked to attend a 30-minute individual interview. All interviews will be held between 8am and 5pm and will take place at the College Nine and College Ten Residential Life and Housing Office. Candidates will be given instructions in signing up in the February 16th email. If you are studying abroad or likewise unable to attend an interview in person, then interviews may be conducted through phone or online communication platform (such as Skype, Hangouts, etc).
At the individual interview, you will be asked questions about your skills and abilities, as well as about your understanding of the RA position and duties.
• March 17th - Decision Sent by Email
All candidates will receive an email with our decision. This email could offer you a position as an RA, in which case it would give you more information about that offer and about the acceptance process. This email could also offer you a position in our alternate pool, in which case it would give you more information about what that means. The email could also not offer you a position. If you do not get a position, we encourage you to apply for other student leader positions and to consider applying for the RA position in future years.
Once you have decided to apply for the RA position, please do the following tasks:

This application contains some demographic questions (name, SID, etc) as well as short answer questions asking about your interest in the position and asking you to rank which areas you prefer to work in (C9 Res Hallls vs C10 Res Halls vs Apartments vs ILC).
2) Complete Online ER RA Application -- (http://www.careercenter.ucsc.edu/ers/erspub/main.cfm)
There are three ER application depending on the area you are applying for. Candidates should fill out the ER application(s) related to the area(s) they are applying for, which can be found by going to "Non-Workstudy Postion" and searching for the relevent ER code: College Nine Res Halls: ER#2335. College Ten Res Halls: ER#2336. Apartments and ILC: ER#2034. You should fill out either one or two ER applications, depending on if how many areas you are applying too.
3) Submit a copy of your Resume - (email to email@example.com)
This resume should be saved as a PDF and should have your name as a title. For assistance in creating a resume, please visit the Career Center or attend one of the many resume workshops held across campus. (Returning Candidates are not required to submit an updated resume unless it contains signficant changes from the previous year.)

One reference should come from a current or former RA, CA, or NA. (Unless you are or have been an RA, CA, or NA...in which case it should come from your CRE supervisor). The other reference should come from someone who can speak about you and your abilities without a conflict of interest, such as an employer, teacher, professor, etc. Please give your references plenty of notice so that they have time to complete the form by the deadline. If you have any difficulty finding someone to complete your form, let us know and we'll work with you on other options. (Returning Candidates are not required to submit references as their current supervisor has already been asked to serve as a reference.)
