College Guide Job Description

The College Guide position is a volunteer position that provides a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth through training, experiential learning, and engagement with the College Nine and College Ten communities.

 

College Guides (CGs) are part of a team that works collaboratively throughout Fall Quarter and the academic year to welcome and orient new students to the UC Santa Cruz community. Using your unique experiences and perspectives, College Guides play a key role in planning Fall Orientation and Welcome Week, and support first-year students throughout the academic year as mentors by helping them explore academic life, involvement, the diverse community, and everything that Colleges Nine and Ten and UC Santa Cruz has to offer.

 

College Guides will gain facilitation, public speaking, team building, and professional skills that will help not only foster their personal growth, but also help create a memorable experience for their group of incoming students. This is a unique volunteer opportunity to join a community of passionate staff and student leaders to form close bonds with a diverse student body, create a welcoming and inclusive community, carry on college traditions, and be a positive influence.

 

There will be 25-30 CG positions available at Colleges Nine and Ten for the 2019-20 academic year. Recruitment begins April, 2020.

 

College Guides are expected to:

  • Participate in CG training in Spring Quarter 2020 and in September prior to the beginning of Fall Quarter 2020.
  • Be available for the duration of Fall Orientation, Welcome Week and Move-In.  
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of Welcome Week: help students move in, direct traffic, plan events, set up and clean up events, lead small groups, create publicity, and other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as an academic and social resource to new students during Fall Quarter and throughout the academic year by answering questions, planning & attending events, leading small groups and helping acclimate new students to college life.
  • Be role models for the community and be in good conduct and academic standing.
  • Attend the College Guide team dinners at the end of Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of a First Year Experience celebration in Spring Quarter.

College Guide will be selected based on their ability to:

  • Understand, develop, and be committed to the College Nine and College Ten themes.
  • Work with diverse groups of individuals with different perspectives and experiences.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Work independently and as a team member.
  • Lead small group discussions.
  • Plan events and programs.
  • Be organized and demonstrate time management skills.

Compensation


College Guides are volunteers and do not receive financial compensation. Other compensation includes:

  • Early move-in for College Guide’s living on campus.
  • All meals during training.
  • Opportunity to form meaningful relationships with other students at College Nine and College Ten.
  • Special limited-edition College Guide gear.
  • Mentoring from Professional Staff.
  • Cultivate an understanding of your leadership style and develop awareness of your strengths.
  • CG's receive a 500 dollar Stipend.
