Keys
If you are locked out of your room…
- Between the hours of 8 AM - 5 PM: You must check out a lockout key from the College Nine and John R. Lewis College Office, and must return the key within 15 MINUTES or you may be fined.
- Between the hours of 7 PM - 3 AM: You must call a Residential Community Service Partners (RCSP) to assist you. The RCSPs can be reached at (831) 459-2100.
- Between the hours of 5 PM - 7 PM and 3 AM - 8 AM: You must call the Resident Assistant (RA) duty phone to assist you. That number is posted on the Housing Office's front door and throughout the community.
You are allowed THREE courtesy lockouts per year. Please note that this includes any RCSP-assisted lockouts. After the first three lockouts, you will be charged $20.00* for each additional lockout.
If you lose your key or have broken your keys…
- You must immediately report a missing or stolen key to the Housing Office. This is both for your safety and the safety of any roommates that are living with you. If you lose your key or your key is stolen, you will be charged a replacement fee for the new key and for the lock change.
- If your key becomes bent or broken, please return it to the C9 & JRL College Housing Office for assistance. Once we receive the broken key, we will issue you a new key.
- Please keep your keys secure and never give them to anyone else. They are your responsibility!
* Please refer to the Residential and Damage Billing Website for a complete and most accurate list of damage costs.
Important Key Handling Reminder
Each key is tested before the Fall quarter to ensure it works smoothly with the door locks for students moving onto campus. Most C9 & JRL College door handles remain in a locked position even when unlocking the residence hall or apartment door. Turning the key while simultaneously pushing the door open can put excess strain on the brass key, causing it to bend or break inside the lock.
As a reminder, the key is designed only to unlock the core, it should not be used as a handle to support the weight of the door. Please ensure you use two hands: one to turn the key to unlock the door before using the other hand to turn the handle to open the door.
We recommend:
- Using two hands to open residential doors: a hand for the handle to push/carry the door weight when entering the room and a hand to insert and turn the key in the lock.
- If the key is sticky, please do not force the key
- gently jingle the key back & forth / up & down to loosen the lock's pins and unlock the door.
- Request to have the lock (core) oiled:
- During office hours, stop by the housing office and ask for help!
- After hours, follow the lockout protocol listed above to get help.
- Key inventory is limited. If the student bends multiple keys and the number of keys issued exceeds the stock of keys on hand, a core change will be scheduled and the student account(s) will be charged.
